I have two daughters, one fifteen years old in high school and the other is 21 and a college student. I am a 49 year old woman and in fair health.
My husband is a Vietnam vet in fair health as well and will be eligible for medicare this year, so he will not need this insurance.

There is a company that deals with insurance needs of the self employed and small business. You mention that you are a small business owner but if you have no employees you probably fit under self employed as well. Most health insurance companies have to have a short period each year where they will take people into their programs at some kind of group rate but this may vary from state to state. This is not going to be cheap. You might just ask someone who sells health insurance if they know which programs fit you. Most, especially in small communities, will take the time to tell you and they know because they know their own industry. If you have not asked anyone in the insurance industry you have not done much research.

With no employees, you're looking at an individual plan. So you're just going to have to shop around accordingly. A few calls to local, independent agents can get you some quotes.

I've been doing research on this since I will be start a new business in a few months and want to be covered with health insurance. I was able to compare a lot of plans and see different prices using http://healthquoteneeded.excellentabc.com . I'm still deciding on which plan to go with but this should help you a bit. Good luck

That will depend on which state you are in. Most companies will not write group health for one employee (yourself). That depends on how they are filed in your state. I suggest you find a knowledgeable independent agent in your area to help you. You may be forced to purchase an individual plan instead of a group plan. Make sure this agent knows the laws and filings of the companies in your state or they may not know all the options you have to choose from.

consider an HSA (health savings account) . It's like a 401k but for medical expenses, and you never loose the money you put into it.
