Why is employer paid health insurance not taxed as a part of wages

Why is employer paid health insurance not taxed as a part of wages?
Companies that provide health insurance deduct what they pay as an expense and their employees don't pay taxes on a huge benefit. That makes health care for those with employer paid health insurance almost free for them. Why shouldn't your employer pay for your auto insurance, too? Why is this fair to those that have to pay their own medical bills? What type of socialism is this? Cogent arguments only, please.

Good question. Probably because the government is behind on health care. That is why we need reform.
2 :
It is not taxed because congress passed a law saying it's not taxed. I have no problem with that. What is screwy is why a self-employed person cannot deduct their health insurance premiums from their taxes. That doesn't make any sense.
3 :
To be fair. It should be. It is a benefit. But in fact, it is the other way around. Companies are given tax breaks to give you insurance. How about your unemployment insurance and the company paid portion of SS. Not that I would vote for it but it is part of your pay.
4 :
I agree with IP above--if employer-provided plans are not taxed, the self-employed ought not to be taxed on their health insurance either. It isn't socialism, either--socialism purports to benefit all workers--not just those hired by bigass companies.
5 :
Its a benefit. Meaning a gift. That is the only thing government can't tax is a gift(up to a certain amount of course). Get a batter job if you're mad about it .
6 :
That's what John McCain proposed. Employer based healthcare is not anywhere near free. It has traditionally been a benefit of a job and auto insurance has nothing to do with it. It's not socialism. I really wish you anothers like you would open a dictionary and read the definition of socialism.
7 :
According to my pay check, my insurance is by no means free!!!
8 :
duh the employees are taxed for the insurance for those that don't work...wake up......
9 :
for the same reason drugs arent taxed. maybe because most people using legal drugs are retired and on fixed income.it is an essential need like unprepared food which isnt taxed. i dont think it is fair. everyone in this country should have affordable health care ,either through work or ,in my opinion, public option.i have health insurance. my brother doesnt. what makes my life worth more than his because i have insurance and he doesnt.i dont think jesus would see that as fair. are we not all his children?
10 :
when employer paid medical insurance started it was because employees were taxed on their wages and often giving them a pay raise resulted in changing the employees tax bracket and could result in less take home pay. so the unions and corporations began using fringe benefits instead of pay raises to compete for the best employees these included health ins. vacation pay and sick pay retirement plans vision care and dental care all paid for by the company. the employe got something that he could use without paying taxes on the money to buy it and the company deducted it as labor expense same as a wage increase.
11 :
If you work for someone they pay your health care and they can right it off as an expense same as the self employed do also. If you pay your part they do not tax that part either. It is subtracted from your gross wages and you are taxed on your after Health care wages. If you have personal ins. it is also taken off but only if you can use deductions. If you do not have enough deductions then you can not. It is like you can not right off your house taxes if you do not have enough deductions to go the long form. Say you lived in an apartment and you made $40,000. a year. Your private health ins. is $200. a month. You would have to look at the chart and do the math to figure if you have the allowable % to deduct. In this case probably No. This is just another way of the tax code being used to confuse. Has nothing to do with socialism.
12 :
To protect labor unions who get insurance worth $25,000 / year
13 :
Health insurance was originally used as a benefit in lieu of higher pay, later it became a benefit deducted from the employee wages, somewhere along the way it was decided that it would not be taxed. The deduction should be available to those who are self employed, and those who choose not to use their employers health plan, in lieu of using their own. Here's another strange tax law. You cannot deduct job hunting expenses unless you're employed during the time that you're looking for a job.
14 :
It is part of the benefit package necessary to attract quality employees. Vacation, sick leave, autos, life insurance and other goodies are also often a part of a pay package. It is not free, it is earned like the other benefits. If you did not receive insurance, you would receive higher wages. There has always been a push to tax such benefits, but it is considered to put too heavy a burden on the middle class. This is not socialism, it is true capitalism. A benefit to attract a better type of employee and keep the employee.
15 :
It is because of the number of people who have that benefit and their voting power.

Can you start using your health insurance card as soon you receive it

Most companies will make it effective next day as long as you don't have any ongoing/unresolved health problems. However if your medical situation is more complicated they can push the effective date back till they have answers. The insurance company will most likely ask to view medical records and/or receive an attending physician statement which because of the snail pace in medical records departments can take up to 18 business days - in other words about a month. Best advice? Start looking for insurance about 30 days before your current coverage will cease to give the underwriting department for your new company time to handle any snafus.

What do you think about the health insurance law they are trying to pass

What do you think about the health insurance law they are trying to pass?
Who wouldn't love to have health insurance. Most people don't have it because it's too expensive and they can't afford it right? Well how now if the law is passed people who don't have health insurance will be fined. Health insurance isn't cheap. I don't know about you but to me that is really unfair to people who can't afford it. Especially in this economical times. I would love to have health insurance. What is your opinion?

You hit the nail on the head, Soon. Everyone will pay & costs will not go down. I remember when we had discretionary auto insurance. You didn't have to have it. Everyone said the cost would go down if everyone had it. Some may think that they can get by without paying. That is wrong thinking. You remember when banks got bailed out? Well, then you must know that the government now has your banking account info. They will also pass the trade & cap to pay for it (again). The purpose of trade & cap is to make you use less energy. So all forms of energy will cost double what they are now.
2 :
Someone said it was like taxing the homeless for not buying a mansion. That about sums it up.
3 :
With so many people out of work, and so many jobs that cover only managers and up, I can see why some would be looking into the government option. When they read it they should note that it will take away their right to privacy and options with any doctor involved in their care. The government should not dictate which tests we should have or when we should die. There is no easy answer for uninsured people, but they definitely should not be fined if they can't afford health care, as the government would like.

What is the most affordable health insurance? Where can I find affordable health insurance for my family? What is the best web site with online quote? Any answer will be appreciated.

There's really no way to know, not knowing the health particulars about your family (pre-existing conditions, where you live, job, etc.). I recommend you just go to the websites of the big companies for a general idea--Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Kaiser, Aetna, etc. There are also some sites that will give you multiple quotes, such as https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/Alliance?allid=Goo18811&sid=QUOTES+042106+1
2 :
there is no such thing as a good deal on health insurance. Insurance thrives on waste and over-expenditure. That's how it works. We throw a bunch of money in a pile and the insurance company, after paying huge salaries and bonuses, decides whether or not they're going to give back what we need when we need it.
3 :
Canadian, were not held hostage by insurance companies. and insurance companies aren't allow to spread rumours of death panels. I pay $900.00 dollars a year basic and another $900.00 for extra coverage.

How to get health insurance for my unborn daughter

How to get health insurance for my unborn daughter?
I'm 22. I have health insurance coverage under my parents (it's just better insurance than I could get on my own, that's why I've kept it). However, I am pregnant and need to find insurance for my daughter for when she's born. Under my current insurance, I am covered but she is not. My question is, what should I do? I got an application for Medicaid but will it cover her before she is born, even though I don't need insurance? Any advice?

1 :
Medicaid will cover from conception, I am almost certain.
2 :
You will have to wait until she is born. You will not be able to get a policy for her until then. You can apply for medicaid for yourself now (even if you do not use it) and add her within 30 days after birth, she will be covered. Some states allow the baby to be covered under the mom's medicaid for 60-90 days after the birth. Check with your state to see if they are one. If you want private insurance for her, go to an independant agent and get the basics set up-know which policy you want to purchase ahead of time. Then when she is born, send the required paperwork in.
3 :
You cannot get coverage for her, before she is born. Medicaid, if you qualify, will possibly go back and cover her, if you apply for it soon enough. But likely, you'll be out of pocket for her birth expenses, unless you use a birthing center or a homebirth, which won't charge for the BABY.

How can the health insurance bill lower our deficit

How can the health insurance bill lower our deficit?
I don't understand how this health insurance bill will lower our deficit. I thought the money to be generated from the tax on this was going to pay for health insurance for those who can't afford it. Now I hear it is being used to pay the deficit down. If the goal is to reform our health care system, shouldn't the money generated by the tax go into improving health care?

2 :
It only lowers the deficit if you tweak the numbers. And, even if the numbers aren't bogus, when have you ever heard of the US government doing anything that cost what they say it will? It always, I mean always costs more than they say it will.
3 :
It cant. Welcome to the newly created USCR (United States Communist Republic) run by our great historic leader Obama.

The proposal includes tax increases and changes in Medicare and the health insurance systems. According to CBO, the combination of those will not only pay for the subsidies but will also lower the deficit in the long run.

What sort of health insurance options does a single woman have who lives on her own and works at the gap

What sort of health insurance options does a single woman have who lives on her own and works at the gap?
I get worried about my girlfriend because she doesn't have health insurance. I am insured through my job, what are her options? Is there something she can sign up for? If she has health issues I want to know that she will be able to afford any necessary medical treatment. Thanks.

There are several options available. Typically, young single females can find affordable polices with Aenta, United Healthcare and a few others. But the way health insurance is structured now, she needs to get something while she is in good health. Policies will start around $50-$75 for higher deductible plans and go up from there. These are monthly rates.
2 :
She can go to a local, independent agent, who can explain all the coverages, and show her how to balance coverages and cost. She CAN buy private health insurance.
3 :
My suggestion is trying to absorb as much information as you can before making up your mind, here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info is a good one.
4 :

5 :
Financial assistance might be available. Certain government programs and nonprofit organizations can help. You can also discuss concerns about paying her medical bills with your health care provider, social worker or the business office of your clinic or hospital. see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/financialassistance.html there are many more such resources at: http://www.simplyinsurancequotes.com/links.php?id=ott0709 http://www.simplyinsurancequotes.com/links.php?id=ott0709

What are the requirements for purchasing travel health insurance

What are the requirements for purchasing travel health insurance?
I'm not asking for myself, but on behalf of someone else. Is it true that, in order to purchase travel health insurance, you must already have health insurance? What is the best way to get affordable travel health insurance? Please no rude or mean answers... I appreciate any constructive advice that you can give. Thanks!

You pay the fee and you get the insurance
2 :
I have one of those things they always refer to as " A preexisting condition " which could require medical help regardless of where I am and what I am doing. This means that when I travel to a country that does not have a reciprocal health care treatment agreement with the U.K.( they will treat ours and we theirs for no charge." I really should have good travel healthy insurance. In my case this is weighted because of preexisting and I usually have to pay about half again as much as other people. I usually purchase it direct from an insurance company rather that through my travel agent and this means that it considerably cheaper than many others do and that my policy is good for three months rather than a few days (always a worry if your return is delayed)..and because I make the purchase direct, the initial cost is much less than from a travel agent who would be paid commission for selling it. You do not have to have any other form of insurance to buy this one and your can travel widely without it..but if you then become ill or suffer an accident during your holiday you can very easily run up bills that you have no means of paying..and be kept in hospital or denied departure from the country until payment of some sort is made.Even if the country you are in will provide free health care because of some agreement with your home country's government, it will certainly not be as good as if you were paying for it and will not offer you the chance of being air-lifted home instead of staying in a local hospital whee you may not even speak the language in order to make your symptoms properly understood. Buy it, ask the seller what you do if you need to make use of it, keep it safe with your passport and leave photocopies of it at home in case you lose it..and then forget about it unless you need to use it.
3 :
For international travel, you can get very good plans at lower rates than you can get for domestic plans. Plans like the Atlas Travel Insurance plan offer protection like lost luggage, emergency evacuation, repatriation, and ad&d benefits in addition to the medical insurance benefits. I am mainly a medical insurance agent so that's why I offer the plans, but you can get them online in minutes and get your card emailed to you instantly. You only need your passport number and the dates of your trip, and you can pay with a credit card. Specifically to answer your question, you don't have to have any other insurance to get this, but this insurance won't cover pre-existing conditions. I hope this helps.
