How to get health insurance for unemployed family member

How to get health insurance for unemployed family member?
My father is 55, unemployed for 9+ months with no options from his previous employer. He has no debt and owns his own home free and clear.
He has limited future employment options and lacks the cash to pay for his own health insurance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

l have to be a little general here because rules differ by state but; Cobra is an option, but it is expensive & only good for 18 months. His last employer might permit him to buy into the group plan. It will cost him, but it is almost always cheaper then any other plan. If he has a retirement plan, does it offer health care? Can he join his spouse's plan? Can he be covered by YOUR plan as a family member? My plan permits it at a premium price but my wife's plan only permits it for minors. Does he have a preexisting condition?? If yes, check with his old insurer, some states require them to help you find a new plan if you are dropped from an existing plan, BUT, it doesn't mean it will be a better ;plan or a cheaper plan. Call them anyway, perhaps they have ideas? Try AARPl Association of retired people. l know they have plans though l don't know much about it. Contact a health insurance company & ask for ideas. l routinely do this at work. Most places are happy to answers question as it is good business. Hope this gives you some ideas.
