it depends on where you are located? the insurance is valid for 40.000 euros, no matter how long you stay? and if is is a tourist visa? it is for 90 days,if student? then it depends on the time of study, the fact that you are healthy is irrelevant, you could have an accident and encounter high hospital bills.

Tourist visa applicants must show that they are in possession of adequate and valid individual or group travel insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment. The insurance must be valid throughout the territory of the Member States applying in full the provisions of the Schengen acquis and cover the entire period of the person's stay. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30000. In principle, the proof of this insurance shall be submitted when the visa is issued. AXA is a global player who offers travel health insurance on almost every place on earth. See their rates on the attached website. http://www.axa-schengen.com/english/axa-assistance-price.html ..

When traveling to a Schengen country, the traveler needs to have health insurance because health insurance is mandatory in Europe. Depending on your age and the amount of coverage selected, you can expect Schengen insurance premium to range from $1 to $10 per day. You do not need to get insurance for the whole year, you only need insurance for the duration of your trip (including the arival and departure days). See here for a site with a lot of information on Schengen visa health insurance http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/schengen_visa_insurance.htm . Note the visa is called "Schengen" visa not "schengan" :)
